This circular walk starts from the very impressive Maiden Castle, one of the largest and most complex Iron Age hillforts in Europe. From the Maiden Castle car park, we follows farm tracks and footpaths to Martinstown (also know as Winterbourne St.Martin), where we pass the church and historic sheep wash before heading on to Winterbourne Steepleton. If the church is open we can view the Saxon Stone Angel carving. From Winterbourne Steepleton we have a long moderately steep hill to climb, followed by a long walk across farmland towards Hardy’s Monument. Depending on the conditions on the day, we can either stop at Hardy’s Monument for lunch where we can enjoy the views, or find somewhere more sheltered. The walk then follows the South Dorset Ridgeway east, with fine views in all directions. After approximately 2.5 miles on the ridgeway, we turn North and follow a path across farmland back to Maiden Castle, where there is the opportunity to fully explore this ancient landmark for those that wish. There is one short road section.
There will likely be some muddy patches along the way.
Expect the usual 4050 brisk pace.
Bring drinks, snacks and a packed lunch to keep you going.
Fields may contain sheep or cows. There are several stiles.
No public toilets, but plenty of cover.
