This walk consists of two distinct parts. The first part, about five and a half miles, takes in the area south of Postbridge. Much of this section goes through Bellever Forest and is relatively easy walking along broad gravel tracks. We visit Bellever Tor, which has excellent views, and Laughter Tor, which never fails to amuse.
The second part of the walk, about five miles, explores the area to the northwest of Postbridge. This ground is more rugged and consists mostly of rough footpaths and some open moorland with a few streams to jump across. It also offers beautiful views, especially where the East Dart flows into a deep valley downstream of the waterfall.
While I would rate the first part of the walk as moderate, the second part is strenuous. As we pass through Postbridge on completion of the first part of the walk, anyone who doesn't want to do the whole walk, or doesn't have time, has the option of finishing their walk at that point.
While it costs £5 to park at the visitor centre car park, there is a free car park on the opposite side of the road about 100 metres up the hill from the entrance to the visitor centre car park. This is a smaller car park, however, so might be full, but it's worth a try. The walk itself will start from the visitor centre as that's where the toilets are!
After the walk, there's the option of drinking something hot or cold at the Warren House Inn, about two miles away.
