Meet outside Epping Station, platform 2 exit (the main exit) at 9.45. From there we will get the bus to Ongar, No. 20 leaving at 10.00, and arriving at Ongar for the start of the walk at about 10.30. The buses are only once an hour so we won't be able to wait for latecomers. We will then walk back to Epping returning along the High Street to Epping Station.
This walk is currently fully booked. Please check the North East London Ramblers website to see if anyone has dropped out and then to book.
There are public toilets at the start of the walk at Ongar.
The walk takes us from Ongar over rolling open countryside and natural woodland back to Epping. We follow the Essex Way for most of the route, with a diversion at the end of the walk into Epping and down the High Street to avoid a potential very muddy section of the Way. Early on we pass Greensted Church which claims to be "the oldest wooden church in the world". There will be time to have a look in the church.
On the walkover there were some muddy sections but these were easily passible with walking boots. There are three stiles (one of which was broken but usable with care) and a little road walking, plus a section along the streets of Epping at the end.
Please bring sandwiches. We will probably stop for an early lunch on the village green at Toot where we should also be able to get coffee or a drink and use the toilets in the pub. There are also plenty of cafes in Epping for a tea stop at the end of the walk.
