The Rhymney Riverside walk winds for 32 miles along the floor of the river through the steep sided glacial valley to the flatter wider valley further south. This section begins from Pontlottyn past the viaduct and former site of the Railway Inn built under one of the arches and on to the school named after Idris Davies, born in 1905 in Rhymney - he was a prolific poet in Welsh and English. The river flows through a steep sided now rural valley to New Tredegar, St Dingat's church and the Winding House Museum at Elliot's town (mothballed by the Council late March 2024). The route follows the old rail track high above the river to Woodland Park, Bargoed, once a busy industrial area with the largest manmade tip in Europe. LS Lowry produced a painting in 1965. It looks a very different place now! Recent years have seen huge changes with new roads and landscaping. Walk and cycle paths take us to Pengam rail station.
