Sir Walter Scott described Glen Lyon as the 'longest, loneliest and loveliest glen in Scotland'. An unusual feature on the hillside above the glen is the Split Rock, known locally as the Praying Hands (of Mary). Also a splendid viewpoint.

Anyone driving direct to the start will see road signs at the beginning of the Glen Lyon road and further along the road, advising that the road ahead is closed. The closure signs do not make it clear that this applies to weekdays only and may be ignored.
