The first in a series of "Really Get To Know" a smaller than usual area of interest with a maze of footpaths which nonetheless offer a varied walking experience.
Coombe Hill is National Trust land on the Chilterns Chalk Escarpment. It is the highest point in Buckinghamshire to offer fabulous views of Chequers, Beacon Hill, Aylesbury and beyond. (Haddington Hill is higher but not so good for views). The Boer War Memorial on top of Coombe Hill is a prominent landmark and popular place to visit.
Bacombe Hill is a nature reserve managed by Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust (BBOWT) with an abundance of fauna including rare species dedicated to the chalkland habitat and placid Dexter cattle roam to assist the rabbits and deer in keeping the grass areas cropped.
These two adjacent locations, both with good views, have many footpaths to enjoy and become familiar with and this route offers a surprising amount of variety.
Please wear appropriate footwear, especially if it has been wet previously.
There are some steep gradients both up and down, but this particular route avoids walking all the way up the two steepest ascents of Coombe Hill.
