A 5-mile linear walk starting from Rhoose railway station following the Wales Coast Path in an easterly direction to Barry, where rail transport is available also. Expect bracing sea views, with the option of fish and/or chips at the end of the route. This will be a joint walk with Cardiff Metropolitan University Rambling & Hiking Society.
Note this is a Saturday walk. Buy a Day Return ticket to Rhoose, and catch the Cardiff to Bridgend train, which leaves Cardiff Central at 09.41 (or pick it up along the way). Alight at Rhoose (Cardiff International Airport) station, where the train is scheduled to arrive at 10.11. The walk leader will be travelling by train and will meet you on the train, or otherwise on arrival at Rhoose station. We will start the walk at 10.15, assuming the train arrives on time. (Should the 09.41 service be cancelled, we will catch the next direct train from Cardiff Central which stops at Rhoose.)
Note that there are no toilets at the start of the walk.
The route is mainly easy-going, with a few small climbs and descents as we follow the contours of the coast. The pace will be leisurely, with time to enjoy the views along the way. Sections of the path are likely to be wet and muddy so feel free to wear gaiters if you have them, and bring walking poles if you use them, for the steps and muddy sections.
Dogs may be brought on this walk.
We will take a break at Mrs Marco's cafe in Porthkerry Country Park, around halfway along the route. Here there is an option to buy a drink and a snack if you wish at the cafe, which is dog-friendly. There are also toilets here. (There are further toilets at Whitmore Bay towards the end of the walk.)
The walk will finish at Barry Island train station where there are 3 trains per hour back towards Cardiff Central. The finish point is close to refreshment options at Barry Island, should you wish to linger for chips and/or ice cream. If you need to return to Rhoose to retrieve a vehicle, there is an hourly service at 5 past the hour from nearby Barry station (not Barry Island).
