This is a walk of just over 4 miles with splendid views of the Tweed Valley all the way. It's the third time of walking out at Worm Hill from Loganburn layby. The first time we explored the history available through a series of interpretation boards to visit the iron age fort and the ruins of a 16th Century Bastle house, plus traces of the Talla Reservoir Pipeline route. The second time was a snowy circumnavigation of the Hill. This time we will go round Worm Hill again (as route on map), but explore the ridge along to Wrae Hill (not shown on map) before descending to Mosfennan to complete the circumnavigation.
We head off up the East Grain valley to Macfumart Head on the slopes of Worm Hill. The track takes us up part of the old route from Tweedsmuir to Biggar between Blakehope Head and Worm Hill. Once we reach this saddle, our diversion takes us up to Chester Rig Head and along Wrae Hill. Then we return to the saddle and continue down the other side before joining a more level route round to the trees above the layby and start point.
The walk is grass and track with some steady climbs, both up and down. Poles might be useful. It will take around 3 hours – so time for a coffee and early lunch.
