Overview

Pleasant countryside and industries old and new comprise this interesting round in a relatively unwalked corner of Wakefield.
On leaving Alverthorpe we skirt the old mill pond and climb to the now-dismantled Wakefield-Bradford railway before threading our way through a new business park and into Roundwood for extensive views over the valley of Spring Mill Beck towards Ossett.
Spring Mill Lane on Shepherd's Hill will provide a welcome lunch stop.
We must then dodge a couple of industrial units to re-cross the Wakefield-Dewsbury Road at Flushdyke, but on the ascent to Lodge Hill Farm the scenery becomes truly rural, rewarding us with glorious open views from the highest point of the walk.
Dropping down to Low Laithes and getting ready to duck as we cross the golf course, we then rejoin the dismantled Bradford-Wakefield railway for the last stage of our journey.
