Starting in the Car Park adjacent to the Riding Centre we walk through part of the former Valleyfield estate and the formal gardens designed by Humphrey Repton. It will be snowdrop time so hopefully there is a good display. We visit the ruins of the cottage where David Douglas the Scottish botanist and collector lived then make our way across reclaimed mining land to view the sculpture commemorating the miners lost in Blairhall Pit. After crossing the road we enter Balgownie Woods to follow the tracks through to Balgownie Mains. There is a short road section which leads to the cycle path, previously the Alloa to Dunfermline railway line. We leave this at Comrie Dean Viaduct and retrace our steps back to Shiresmill.
This walk is part of the 30th Anniversary celebrations - 30 Great Years - 30 Favourite Walks.
Good forestry paths and tracks which are maintained by West Fife Woodland Group.
Section on cycle track, previously railway line.
Local Grade C+.
