We will leave the stunning red cliffs of regency Sidmouth and head out along this section of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site. There are views from Salcombe Hill back to the South Devon coast to Torbay and ahead along the red cliffs towards Dorset.
We will cross the wild little valley of Lincombe and perhaps stop at the pebbly beach at Weston Mouth then pass the flowers, grasses and butterflies of the Weston Wildflower Meadow.
We will meet the remains Berry Cliff Camp: an Iron Age hill fort and soon arrive at the beach at Branscombe for lunch (and a swim?)….
After lunch our walk will enable us to look down to the Hooken Cliff at the dramatic views formed by a landslide in 1790. There will be views from Beer Head over to Seaton Bay and we will next arrive in the fishing village of Beer with its enormous exposed chalk cliffs (and birthplace of the smuggler Jack Rattenbury, “Rob Roy of the West”). We will then walk on to Seaton where a bus at 4.30 pm will take us back to Sidmouth where we could take refreshments / or the bus goes on through to Exeter. (If we miss this bus there is another at 5.30 pm back to Sidmouth and a change for another bus back to Exeter). Please check Stagecoach bus timetable for options. The walk leader will drive to Sidmouth.
