The river Severn (Hafren in Welsh) rises some 620 metres above sea level on the Pumlumon ridge. Our walk to the source starts from the Hafren Forest parking area, initially following well laid, way-marked trails alongside the river and through forest, now partly felled. The path eventually breaks out into open, heathery moorland and continues, now slabbed, through peat banks. Soon we see the wooden post making the source of the Severn, a wide area of marshy pools showing little promise of the mighty river which it will later become. We only have to go a few yards beyond to attain the grassy Pumlumon ridge which we will ascend as far as the 742 metre top of Pumlumon Arwystli. The views towards the coast and to the mountains of Snowdonia are spectacular. Retracing our steps for a short distance, we turn back down towards the forest, Eventaully re-joining way-marked trails for our return to the start.
Group Grade C+
Those preferring a shorter, 7 mile walk, may omit the ascent of Pumlumon Arwystli and take an extended lunch break while awaiting the return of the rest of the group.
