Venturing further afield for a fabulous, hilly, 9.5 mile walk over the South Downs, starting from the attractive village of Buriton (off the A3 south of Petersfield). From there we climb through an area of chalk pits, once an important industry for the village, now a nature reserve, and home to the rare cheese snail. Then a gentler steady ascent on lesser used paths through the magnificent Queen Elizabeth Country Park with its fine mixed woodland, pausing for coffee (bring your own) in the woods. Then we come out on to open countryside with far reaching views, even more so after a steepish ascent to Windmill Hill, from where you can look down on Butser Ancient Farm (not open on day of our trip). After that you will have earnt your lunch!
So, we shall pause at the Red Lion at Chalton for lunch (or bring your own to picnic outside). They serve wonderful cheesy chips if those appeal and plenty of other options.
Our return will be along the Staunton Way, passing Ditcham Park, then delightful woodland paths, passing a stunning little nature reserve, which is worth returning to in summer. Our final descent back to Buriton will be on the Milky Way (we shall ponder why so named).
Because the drive is further, I suggest MV residents car share from Young Street CP near Leatherhead.
