Overview

We start at the Car Park at National Trust Stourhead where there are toilets and a cafe.

There is a charge to park but free to National Trust Members, there is usually some free parking available along High Street either by the cottages on the way in from Mere, or close to St Peter's Church.

Our walk starts out from the National Trust visitor centre,in the car park and we will  passing the stately home of Stourhead House  along the Stour Valley Way. We turn NE towards Kilmington and follow a network of paths and bridleways to Dead Women's Corner. There are some livestock and stiles on this section. 

We enter Witham Park at Trout Pond Wood and walk through the forest to West End Wood and Kings Wood where we will lunch at the half way point. We head South towards St Peter's Pump near the source of the River Stour and walk through meadows to King Alfred's Tower. (There is a pop up cafe just before it). We then enter the forest again and make our way back to the edge of the Stourhead ornamental gardens, passing the lakes ,waterwheel and the waterfall and then head to Bristol Cross and  St Peter's Church arriving at the Spread Eagle Pub back up the hill to the car park , or entering it for optional post walk refreshments.

Note: our group walks quite briskly; this route is moderately demanding but the terrain is not especially challenging. If you have any concerns about fitness/capability please contact the walk leader in advance.

The venue is approximately 1 hour 15 minutes drive from Poole and can be approached from the south via A350 to Shaftesbury continuing to pick up,the A303 and coming off just after Mere on B3092, follow the National Trust signs to Stourhead.
