Want to get into walking? Why not join us as we launch our annual 'super six' campaign of 'easy' post Xmas & New Year walks specifically aimed at encouraging people who wish to give walking in the Lancashire countryside a try.
We guarantee a warm welcome, a smattering of humour and the likelihood of some mud so please ensure you wear suitable footwear and bring a waterproof jacket!
Meeting point: Batridge Road Car Park (Turton and Entwistle Reservoir lower car park – additional car parking is available on the upper, Batridge Barn Car Park: both car parks are now free of charge). For a precise location, please use What3Words, https://what3words.com/himself.enough.tissue – the car park access is along Batridge Road from Green Arms Road … the best postcode to use is BL7 0NE (do not try to access the car park along Overshores Road and then Batridge Road from Entwistle!). Alternatively, train service permitting, you can travel to/from Entwistle railway station (request stop on the Manchester to Clitheroe line) which is 5-10 minutes’ walk from the starting point of our walk.
This walk is a shortened version of the Warper’s Trail, one of four trails which combine to form the Witton Weavers Way. We start our walk by leaving Batridge Road Car Park and heading uphill to cross the B6391 Green Arms Road. We then head along the raised track, before turning left, passing over the railway bridge and the 15th Century Tudor Grade I listed manor house, Turton Tower. Walking a short distance down the B6391, we cross over the road, and walk down to Jumbles Reservoir. Next we take the embankment over the reservoir and follow Bradshaw Brook up to the village of Edgworth, looping round to the northern part of the village, emerging at Barlow Institute. Here we’ll stop for a short lunch break (of 25-30 minutes), either eating your packed lunch outside or purchasing lunch at its Reading Room Café.
Renourished, we walk through Edgworth, to the Black Bull. Resisting the temptation to pass through its front entrance, we head along the nearside the pub and down to Wayoh Reservoir, then tracking around its eastern bank. Finally, we climb up to the hamlet of Entwistle, where you can either stop off for a well-earned drink at the Strawbury Duck, or, via Overshores Road, pass back down to Turton and Entwistle Reservoir, and return to your car.
