Overview

This walk is for up to 20 people, including the leader.

The weekend betwixt the Christmas and New Year festivities is a perfect time for a walk so we've decided to squeeze one more ramble into 2024. Join us on our last walk of the year!

From the outskirts of Hertford we'll head west, with the village of Tewin in our sights as the destination for both our packed lunch and pub stop. On the way there we will take an immediate detour through the village of Hertingfordbury to visit St Mary's Church, which holds surprisingly impressive tombs and monuments inside. There may even be the chance of a hot drink as the Rev. Alan Stewart has said we are most welcome to join the post-service coffee! Passing back through the village, we'll slip into Panshanger Park and make our way through its southern half, keeping an eye out for the newly introduced 'iron age' pigs as we take some of its lesser-trod paths.

We'll leave the park behind on the way to Tewin, skirting the edges of Archers Green and Tewinbury Farm, before our lunch stop at the village green, where benches will await us. After devouring the last of our Xmas leftovers, we'll head to the nearby Rose & Crown pub for a quick drink before setting off back towards our starting point.

This will take us through Marden Hill with its country house & ponies, then into the northern edge of Panshanger Park on another little-used path. We'll ramble through the main part of the park, taking in its landscaped views, lakes, rivers and woodland once again and hopefully spotting the resident long-horned cattle along the way, before a brief urban stretch returns us whence we came.

Given the time of year, it could be muddy in places so appropriate footwear (e.g. boots) recommended.

Dogs are welcome on a lead (we expect to be passing livestock).

For information about walking with the group, including our dog policy, please visit the Stag Walkers website.

Booking your place: Please book your place using the free Meetup website/app. Join the Stag Walkers Meetup group and click the 'Attend' button on the event page.

Please do not turn up for a walk without booking, as places are limited.

If the walk is fully booked, click 'join waitlist' to get a place if one becomes available and please check back regularly in case you do get a place. The waitlist gives priority to single bookings so if you wish to bring a guest, we recommend booking separately.

Unless you opt in to further communications, we will only use contact information you provide to get in touch about the walk.

Please:

  • DO NOT book onto a walk unless you are pretty sure you will be able to make it.

  • UPDATE YOUR RSVP. We understand ‘life happens’ so if you need to change your RSVP please do this at least 24 hours before the walk and before booking closes to enable someone else to take your place.

  • DON’T NO-SHOW on the day unless it is absolutely unavoidable (we do understand ‘life happens’) because it prevents others from enjoying a walk if it is fully booked.

  • *TAKE NOTE that if you no-show three times, without extenuating circumstances, we will decline further bookings from you for a period of six weeks.*

  • DO car-share or use public transport if possible. To offer a lift or ask for one from a fellow walker, please use the Meetup event page.

  • BRING a packed lunch/snacks and drinks, appropriate clothing for the conditions and optionally a basic first aid kit.

  • FOLLOW NHS guidelines and do not attend the walk if you are unwell.

Start time:

200 Hertingfordbury Road, Hertford, SG14 2LA. What3words: ///clown.hedge.door The starting point is on a side road which runs parallel to the A414 (confusingly also called Hertingfordbury Road, so use the address above or look for a business called ""Laura J Pilates"" which is tagged on Google Maps). The turn-off is on the north side between the two roundabouts on the A414. A footpath runs from near Hertford North station all the way to this point (15-20mins walk). There should be plenty of free street parking available all the way along this road but please park considerately and not directly outside the houses at the far end (best spots are before you get to the footpath). The walk leader will be waiting in a layby where the footpath meets the road (usually a campervan parked here).
