Our walk today explores an area SW of the village of Llanfachreth, visiting the fascinating remains of the Glasdir Copper Mine and the ever-popular Precipice Walk. We start by heading towards the copper mine. The mine was worked from around 1852 until 1913 and it was here that the revolutionary technique of oil flotation was developed to separate the ore. Our route now climbs up quite steeply to join the Precipice Walk, a permissive route on the ancient Nannau estate which the public have been permitted to use for well over a hundred years. Here, a narrow path contours across the steep hillside some 800 feet above the Afon Mawddach, with incomparable views down the estuary towards the sea at Barmouth and, later on, over the nearby mountains. We then follow a lakeside path by the tranquil Llyn Cynwch before heading back down to the start.
