This walk offers an excellent circuit using two very different waterways.
The walk starts at Haymarket Station Entrance Hall.
We proceed to the right along Morrison Street and turn right on Gardner’s Crescent keeping ahead between buildings to reach Lochrin Quay. As building works are being carried out on the R. towpath we use the L.towpath until we reach Leamington lift bridge where we cross. We then make our way along the canal to reach Slateford.
After crossing Lanark Road at Slateford there are steps which go down to the Water of Leith Visitor Centre. Here we stop for lunch. From here it’s a R. turn onto the riverside path passing under canal and railway. We follow the river as it goes 90 degrees right, cross the river on the footbridge and continue with the path to Gorgie Road . We cross at the pedestrian lights and return to the riverside path. At the end of the path we cross Ford’s Road into Saughton Park and follow the main path through the park at the end of which we cross Balgreen Road and go through a gate to continue with the riverside path. Soon, Murrayfield Stadium comes into view straight ahead where we follow the edge of Roseburn Park.
At the far end of the park we turn L. then L. again to reach Roseburn Terrace, cross, and continue along Roseburn Cliff to reach steps down to the riverside . The path passes under Coltbridge Viaduct and further on makes a sharp turn with the river to the right. In a further 300 metres we go up a long flight of steps, go R. at the top then turn L. on Haymarket Terrace to go back to the Station.
