This is a typical Lakeland walk comprising some field tracks and lanes, but also stony sections which are steep in places particularly when we venture beyond Grasmere after the lunch stop. Our plan is to take the four mile long Coffin Route from Ambleside to Grasmere which was used to carry coffins on their final journey to St Oswald's Church. This route provides good views of Rydal Water, and passes Rydal Hall, Rydal Falls, Rydal Mount and Dove Cottage, the home of poet William Wordsworth.
After a break for lunch, participants can decide either to return to Ambleside using the frequent public bus service, or to continue with the leaders from Grasmere to the delightful Easedale Tarn taking a two mile long more strenuous ascending path following Easedale Beck and Sour Milk Gill. If you take this option, we will then retrace our steps back to Grasmere, and, having completed a total of eight miles, return to Ambleside using the public bus service.
All participants should bring their bus passes if they have one, and walking poles will be helpful if you use them as the route could be slippery in places when wet.
