This is a splendid walk that takes us into the ancient hunting grounds of the Bishops of Durham, dominated in more recent times by mining and quarrying.
The walk is in three distinct parts beginning with a climb north from Westgate along the wooded Middlehope Burn (which is dotted with the industrial remains including Slit Mine) to meet a good track above the valley. Crossing the moors of Northgate Fell, we reach Rookhope. This moorland section of the walk is more challenging, leading us across mainly rough ground. Finally, our return around Hangingwells Common and Heights Quarry follows the route of A Pennine Journey along an old mineral railway trackbed.
Advance booking is required for this walk. To reserve your place, please e-mail the walk leader, Josie B., through the contact box above - and remember to include your mobile number in the mail.
Booking opens on Monday, 21st October.
