Description updated:
A moderate walk with some hills, off-road, without stiles, (but a few small fallen trees to clamber over or under) fabulous views (weather permitting), woodland and grassland, including Nature Reserves.
We walk up to Whiteleaf Cross, admire the superb view, then head North to Grangelands and RifleRange Nature Reserve. Through the very rare boxwood forest, past Beacon Hill, to Ellesborough, around Coombe Hill, past Hill End Farm, Bacombe Hill and a gradual incline up to the Coombe Hill Monument where there are more fantastic views. We take the Ridgeway Path to Buckmoorend Farm Shop where we will stop for refreshments / packed lunch at or shortly after 1.30pm. After that we walk through the famous Chequers Estate and woodlands: Pond Wood, Pulpit Wood, Hobs Hill and Ninn Wood, through the Hangings Valley, before a hill at the end takes us back up toward the car park at Whiteleaf Hill where we started.
(That last hill is optional, as it can be avoided by walking around rather than down into the valley and back up). The worst of the earlier mud has dried out this week, (still a few patches) but it is recommended to wear proper walking boots, and bring poles if you need them.
