A walk taking in the best of the superb features of the River Itchen both south and north of the city centre, plus downland paths on the south side allowing great views back over the city and its nearby countryside. Starting at the railway station and taking in quiet routes via the cathedral close, St Cross Hospital and the Winnall Moors nature reserve.
Meet at Basingstoke railway station ticket hall at 08.30 to catch the 08.49 Weymouth train to Winchester. Walk starts from outside Winchester station main entrance at 09.15. (The early start is to avoid the worst of any heat if it's a hot day.)
There will be a coffee stop at the first viewpoint above St Cross and a lunch stop at Compton Lock. Bring your own refreshments and lunch. There are plenty of food/drink outlets at Basingstoke and Winchester stations plus toilet facilities.
Although all the paths are well used, there are likely to be nettles and brambles encroaching at some points, There are likely to be cattle grazing by the river but they are generally very docile.
Latest return time at Winchester station is likely to be about 15.30 and at Basingstoke, 15.50.
