Overview

Please note the later start time. Come by train, either main line or DLR (we came by bus, not recommended).  There are various toilets along the way.  Bring your own lunch. There is no pub on this walk. Meet outside the station.  Chuck gives this walk 7 out of 10.

From Woolwich Arsenal station we make our way to the nearby river Thames, close to the Woolwich Free Ferry terminal.  Taking the Thames Path we make our way up river towards the Thames Barrier, which can be seen in the distance.

Before reaching the barrier the path leaves the river and the route takes us for a while on quite streets and then a fairly quite Woolwich Road.

When we are opposite the Windrush school there is a dark opening into Maryon Park, which to my mind is the start of the Capital Ring.  It follows the pattern of the London LOOP of a series of parks, open spaces and playing fields, connected by short walks on quiet roads.

After leaving Woolwich Common, we cross Rochester Road at the bottom of Shooters Hill and start an easy climb across Eltham Common and enter a woodland path, passing Severndrood Castle and reach Oxleas Café, where we stop for lunch.

The Café has toilets and serves drinks and light snacks, but is very slow and I suggest that you bring your own packed lunch.  There are plenty of seats outside the fenced Café area and a great view across South East London.

After lunch we continue downwards and then through Eltham Park, Eltham Park South, North Park,  passed Eltham Palace and along the Quaggy River to Grove Park.
