Overview

A partial circuit of Worthington Lakes, followed by the abandoned railway line to Adlington. From there we return via the Leeds and Liverpool Canal to complete the circuit of the Lakes.

Estimated finish time:
3:30 pm

Leisurely

9km / 5.6mi

We start with a fairly level walk north along the western side of the lake, before crossing the causeway and ascending through the woods to Wigan Golf Club. There we cross the canal and reach the old railway line, which is now a cycle track. On reaching Adlington, there is a short descent to cross the River Douglas, before ascending into the park, and crossing the canal before returning to Wigan Golf Club and retracing our steps to the Lake. Here we turn left and complete the circuit of the lake round its south end, and into the car park. Good paths throughout, though liable to flooding in places in the event of prolonged heavy rain.
