Walking in and around Chelmer & Blackwater
We are based in Chelmsford, Essex and take our name from the Chelmer and Blackwater rivers which flow through central Essex. Our walks normally take place within a 30-mile radius of Chelmsford, but we often visit venues further afield in London and the surrounding counties as well as organising coach walks and social events.
We run full day walks of approximately 10 miles on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, afternoon walks of 5-6 miles on Saturday afternoons and evening 'pub' walks in June and July.
Walks are usually circular but are sometimes a figure of eight, giving the opportunity to join for a half day walk, and full day walks nearly always stop at a pub at lunchtime. The numbers on walks can vary from five to 35, and you can always guarantee a very friendly welcome and an enjoyable walk led by experienced leaders. You are very welcome to join us for 2 or 3 walks without becoming a Ramblers member.
Get involved
Our Group gives everyone the opportunity to enjoy walking, get outside and make new friends. You can discover how walking boosts your health and wellbeing, whether walking through beech forests, ever changing farmland or the wide open horizons of the Essex saltmarsh.
We are active in protecting the footpaths and places we love to walk, and our walks explore hidden parts of Essex through its extensive network of footpaths and green lanes.
We run a number of coach trips each year to areas outside the county and also organise an annual walking holiday. We're a sociable group who just want to enjoy our local countryside and always give new members the warmest possible welcome.
