Wakling in Cirencester and beyond
Welcome to the Cirencester Group. We are part of Gloucestershire Area Ramblers and were founded in 1974.
Cirencester lies at the heart of the picturesque Cotswolds, whose rolling pastures and honey-coloured stone villages offer a range of walks, from gentle to more challenging. We also walk further afield, in the beautiful valleys of the Severn and the Wye, the Forest of Dean, and the wide spaces of the Wiltshire and Oxfordshire Downs.
On Sunday mornings we offer a walk of between 5 and 10 miles. Shorter, easier midweek walks and, in the summer months, evening walks, end with an optional, sociable drink. Away-weekends, mid-week breaks, away-days and social evenings provide an opportunity for members to get to know each other and to walk in different areas.
We are also active in monitoring and maintaining the 400 footpaths in our area, ensuring that the paths are open and accessible for all.
Our friendly walking group
We are known for our friendliness and the welcome we offer to members and visitors of all ages. We can guarantee that, if you join our group, you will make new friends, improve your physical health, relax your mind and have fun.
In addition to our regular led walks, we hold a number of social events, including our annual Strawberry Tea, usually held in a member’s garden, and our Christmas meal and walk, when out come the Christmas hats and jumpers!
Our away-breaks feature two days of walking, often on the coast, staying in comfortable hotels with excellent food.
Our active Footpath Committee follows up reports of overgrown footpaths, damaged or missing signage, or broken stiles and bridges. They arrange regular working parties to help maintain the paths, when hard work in the fresh air may be rewarded with some much-appreciated home-baking.
