What we do
Promoting local walking
Alongside our regular walks program, we are proud to have developed the Wokingham Way, a 55 mile route broken into 10 stages of between 5 and 7 miles. The walk is varied, from the majesty of the Thames to ancient lanes, byways, and open fields. More information, including walk directions and maps can be found at https://www.lvra.org.uk/WokWay/index.html.
Several of our members have been active designing local walk routes of between 1 and 11 miles for Earley and Woodley Town Councils including some that are wheelchair accessible. Details of these can be found at https://www.earley-tc.gov.uk/walks/ and https://www.woodley.gov.uk/walks
Paths and Local Rights of Way
We actively monitor the condition of our local rights of way and report defects to the local authority. We act as a pressure group to ensure that landowners comply with their legal obligations and that the local authority keeps local footpaths open and in good repair.
We are regularly consulted about planning applications which affect rights of way. To help the local authority keep footpaths in good order, we organise volunteer working parties to improve walking surfaces, cut back intrusive vegetation, and repair footbridges. We have an ongoing programme for our volunteers to replace stiles with kissing gates across Wokingham Borough.
