Walking in the countryside around Reading

Welcome to our very friendly walking group. We provide a wide-ranging programme covering the varied countryside around Reading. This includes south Oxfordshire, the mid-Thames and Pang valleys, the Chilterns, West Berkshire and the Downs, much of which is classified as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Our walks vary in length and difficulty, to suit degrees of fitness. Short 2-3 mile walks tend to be on Saturdays, with a leisurely pace to enjoy the countryside and historic buildings. Midweek walks, usually on Wednesday mornings but sometimes on other weekdays, are around 5 miles, often followed with an optional pub or café lunch.

Sunday has walks around this length, or longer walks with a sandwich lunch break. We have some mid-week summer evening walks, with social time at a local pub afterwards. We also arrange one or two walking holidays each year, and have a full social programme of events.

Join our walking community

We are renowned as a friendly walking group, and we extend a warm welcome to new members. You will be joining a group of people who are enthusiastic about walking in the glorious countryside around our area. Our experienced walk leaders are familiar with their walks and will highlight points of interest, both in the countryside and on our occasional town walks.

Our Pang Valley community is kept informed by the lively newsletter that accompanies our four monthly walking programme. We also send out weekly reminders of walks and other events, and maintain an up-to-date website. While walking is our mainstay, we hold several social events such as an annual fish-and-chip supper and quiz, and a Christmas meal.

You will be joining a group that supports the wider Ramblers’ mission to safeguard the national network of paths, and you are welcome to help with this valuable work.

Looking after our path network

The Ramblers’ remit is wider than just organising walks. We have a responsibility for the network of paths and we are fully involved in looking after our local area. Our Footpath and Countryside officers keep a watching brief on what is happening, from monitoring and submitting objections to planning applications to attending local access forums that involve other groups interested in the countryside: cycling, equestrian and land owners. Some of our members also help with path clearing and notifying path problems (faulty stiles, blocked paths, etc) within West Berkshire.

Campaign with us - protect the places we walk

Walking is a simple pleasure that should be open to everyone, so we campaign to remove barriers to walking and we protect the places we love to wander.
