Wooler is on the edge of Northumberland National Park and is the gateway to the Cheviot Hills. Wooler may be from Old English wella "well, spring" and ofer (ridge, hill). The well or spring referred to is the River Till.
What ever the origin of its name there is wonderful walking to be had and on previous walks we have walked through and above the splendid College Valley, seen the falls at Hethpool Linn, summited many a Cheviot Hill, and walked along parts of St Cuthbert's Way.
