Overview

A walk through the countryside of the Deerness Valley between Brandon and Bearpark, with good views of Durham Cathedral and the Penshaw Monument on a clear day.

Wednesday, 16 October 2024
Start time:
10:30 am
Estimated finish time:
2:30 pm
Difficulty:
Moderate
Distance:
14.5km / 9.0mi
Ascent:
192.9m / 633ft
Type:
circular

The walk is on disused railway paths, field paths and farm tracks, with a couple of short sections of road walking. There is a steep descent via steps to the Deerness Valley, and a steep ascent on uneven ground up to Primrose Side Farm, then a more gradual ascent towards Brandon. From Brandon the route descends to the valley again before another short ascent to the railway path, which we cross to go towards Ushaw Moor and then on to Bearpark. From there the route goes via Lodge Farm to the Lanchester Valley railway path, which we follow back to the start.
The route is likely to be muddy after rain so gaiters and waterproof footwear recommended. No cattle or horses on the recce, but lots of sheep so no dogs please.
