Return to Canvey - A flat circular walk around Canvey Island which follows the sea-wall. A truly unique walk! Canvey Island has a rich history of settlements and this walk highlights views of Hadleigh Castle, Southend Pier, The Thames Estuary and beyond to the North Sea; marshes and Canvey's industrial heritage. Canvey's seawall murals captures the island's changing history; its lived experiences and the islands famous rock bound, Dr Feelgood. The Island's literary connection is immortalised by Charles Dickens description of the Inn (The Lobster Smack) in Great Expectations. The lunch stop is after six miles. Food may be purchased from local outlets however its recommend to take a packed lunch. There is a second stop at The Lobster Smack.
This is a full days walk at a brisk pace.
Travel
Take the 10:34 train from London Fenchurch Street (West Ham 10:43) arrives Benfleet 11:16. Buy a return ticket to Benfleet Railway Station or if holder of a Freedom Pass a Day Rover Ticket for £7:00
Toilets are available at Benfleet Railway Station before commencing the walk.
Drop-out points - bus back to Benfleet Station after 6 or 8 miles.
