This walk follows the eastern shore of Chichester Harbour from Dell Quay along footpaths to Chichester Marina, Birdham Pool and Itchenor (morning coffee break) on to West Wittering for a paddle (weather and tides permiting) ice creams or refreshments at West Wittering beach. A bus at the village of West Wittering takes us back to the cars. Remember your bus pass or bring money for fare (c£4) and ice cream. Picnic lunch stop en route.
The paths are fairly level. Some tarmac, shingle, on the beach, through woods with some uneven sections with tree roots. All accessible with care. Between the marinas we pass along field paths lined with hedges or open to views across the water to Hayling Island and Bosham and in the distance, The South Downs. Woodland and fields are interspersed with spectacular waterside houses and eventually we come to the open expanse of the harbour and further out we can see the Isle of Wight and the English Channel. The National Trust area of East Head is an optional addition which adds on another mile. Those who prefer a shorter option will walk to the cafe and we'll all meet up there to walk the last half mile to the bus stop.
Park and meet at Dell Quay Road, Apuldram. Park where possible. Free.
