A circular walk from Goathland with a choice of distances and climbs. The main walk is planned at 9.2 miles and 927 feet of ascent, with an easily self navigated extension to 10 miles and 1186 feet of ascent. It will also be possible to shorten the length to 6 miles with only 421 feet of ascent, again easily self guided for the latter stage.
Leaving Goathland the route takes the line of the old railway and then climbs to Simon Howe, then reversing to Two Howes Rigg before descending to the Mallyan Spout Hotel. The shorter walk returns to the start from here. The leader will continue down to Mallyan Spout and then to Beck Hole, walking for a short distance towards Grosmont on the old railway line then turning back through the woods and ascending the inclined plane to the start point. More adventurous types can leave the rest at Beck Hole and return via Lins Farm and Mill Scar.
The ascent to Simon Howe and the descent to the Mallyan Spout hotel is uneven and, if after rain, muddy. There are also uneven sections returning from the railway line to Beck Hole.
There is a good chance that the Birch Hall Inn at Beck Hole will be open when we pass on the return journey and a refreshment break may be called for those who wish to stop. For those who don't wish to stop the route back to the cars is easy to follow. Please note that the Inn only accepts cash.
