From Shelford across fields to the growing Biomedical Campus, then up Vicar’s Brook to the river Cam, which we follow along “The Backs”. We enter the city via Garret Hostel Lane, passing many university buildings, and leave via Bridge Street, with a lunch stop opposite Magdalene College. After lunch we continue along the Cam past boathouses and parkland to Cambridge North station.
Toilets: use toilets on train, then at Lammas Land, lunch stop, Midsummer Common and end of walk. Drop-out in the city centre to spend more time there and walk or bus to Cambridge station.
Lunch: cafés or picnic near Magdalene Bridge.
Train: London Liverpool Street 9:28 (Cambridge North train) arrive Shelford 10:44. Buy return to Cambridge North. Return from Cambridge North to Liverpool Street or Kings Cross.
The walk takes a cross-section through Cambridge from open fields to the south, through the historic centre, and out again to the north. The Cam can flood, in which case the route may be modified.
