This varied circular amble begins and ends at Doune Ponds, a reclaimed wetlands on the
outskirts of Doune. We follow a section of the river Teith before passing Ye Olde Doune Castle
of Monty Python and the Holy Grail fame. Traversing the post-modernist looking wooden bridge
back into the heart of the village, we strike out along a stretch of the former Dunblane to
Callander railway before climbing through woodland with its views across the surrounding
countryside. Taking the short sharp descent to Doune Ponds, we wander deliciously to our
starting point. There is the promise of red squirrels, but I wouldn’t hold your breath.
Some conditions to be aware of: short 50 metre stretch of pavement walking adjacent to the busy A84 at the start of the walk; shortish riverside section with steep drop to the water on one side and steep descent via well-maintained, steps towards the end of the walk.
