Overview

**** This is a pre-booked event (£15 per person) – please contact the secretary Annelie if you want to go but have not booked on)

The Dundreggan Rewilding Centre is a must-see for anyone with an interest in nature and in forest restoration. They have created a rewilding nursery, where they grow tens of thousands of native trees each year, including rare and hard-to-grow species which in turn attracts a wide variety of bird and wildlife. Located just 8 miles from Loch Ness, the estate has been rewilded by Trees for Life since 2008, to help it recover from centuries of damage. By allowing the forest to regenerate naturally, they have expanded important fragments of Scotland’s Caledonian forest, providing a habitat for over 4,000 species of plants and animals, including golden eagles and black grouse.

Meet 0830 – Start 0930 – Grade C – OS Sheet 34 – NGR NH332147

The guided tour  -   Please dress as you would for a normal hiking day out  with packed lunch etc.  Long trousers & gaiters recommended in case of ticks, plus insect repellent in case of midges

On this interesting and informative guided tour,  the Dundreggan guide will take us around the estate, starting out with the tree nursery, through the ancient pinewood and juniper forest, and will also take us up the hill (373mtr) which will give stunning views across the rest of the estate and beyond. The guide will tell us about the tree varieties, the bird and wildlife and will also interweave their talk with tales of Highland myth and folk tales, including hearing how the Gaelic place names provide clues to how the land was before it was depleted. Although not many miles to cover, the tour takes up to 4 hours to complete, mostly on paths - with the route to the top of the hill involving going a short distance over pathless, uneven, heathery ground.  The cafe is also very good and serves delicious food and hot drinks!
