Parking is available using any of the three Park and Ride car parks and getting the bus to the city centre, free with a bus pass, alighting close to the Market Place at the bottom of Claypath or on Milburngate Bridge.
Toilets are available at the Gala Theatre in Millenium Place, although our first stop will be at the Cathedral’s toilets about 10 minutes into the walk.
Distance approx. 5 miles undulating with a couple of gates and some steps on a mixture of solid and earth paths, some of which could be muddy.
Starting Point – statue of Neptune in the Market Place.
Walk – Leaving the Market Place we head for the Cathedral and the ancient buildings around Palace Green, down Dun Cow Lane and through the College to the rear of the Cathedral where we will stop to use the toilet facilities.
We proceed through an arch down to the river bank which we follow to Elvet Bridge. We climb up a short lane to the Bridge and cross the River Wear. Turning left we pass some interesting old cottages/warehouses and the old Baths.
Continuing we pass the Racecourse as walk as far as Maiden Castle where we recross the river and walk uphill past Old Durham Gardens and through a field, with great views, and part of Pelaw Woods before descending back to the riverside.
We walk along what is the opposite bank of the river and return to the Market Place. Here we end our walk in the heart of the City Centre with its multitude of restaurants, cafes and pubs.
Footnote – Some of the walk will be on earth paths which could become muddy therefore boots are recommended and sticks could be useful. A weather dependant break will be included, although at the end there is a massive choice of eateries etc.
