Join me to explore Epping Forest as Part 1 of The Essex Way. Whilst not strictly regarded as part of The Essex Way by all, it is where our journey begins.
The Essex Way is 81 miles of glorious Essex from Epping to Harwich and a superb trail in which to develop a love for this often underrated county. I can almost certainly promise mud at times, incredible scenery and fascinating history along the way.
Our journey begins at Manor Park Station (Elizabeth Line) where we shall meet outside the station at 10am. After crossing Wanstead Flats we pass Hollow Pond before continuing towards Queen Elizabeth's Hunting Lodge, our lunch stop. Please bring a picnic lunch, drinks are available at The Butler's Rest. This is also an early exit point, Chingford Station is a 500m walk with regular Overground (Weaver Line) trains to Central London.
Following the established paths in Epping Forest we pass High Beach and Ambresbury Banks Iron Age hill fort before reaching Epping.
Epping Underground Station is a short walk from Epping High Street where refreshments may be found before returning to Central London on the Underground (Central Line).
Dogs are welcome with well behaved owners who are respectful of other walkers, cyclists, horses and grazing stock.
The finish time is an estimate and is dependent upon the speed of the group, the number of breaks taken and conditions on the day.
