A circular walk from Goathland taking in moorland, wooded areas, and hopefully glimpses of trains.
It is possible to reduce the length to 6.6 miles and take an easy to follow road route back to the start.
Setting off from Goathland the walk crosses the railway line by the station and then climbs along Mill Scar before a descent, and then ascent, to near Hawthorn Hill Farm. A descent then leads to the railway line which is followed until near Dowson Garth when a turn to the south leads to the bottom of the inclined plane, before following West Beck to the steps up to Mallyan Spout Hotel.
Here there is an opportunity to shorten the walk by a couple of miles or to continue towards Abbots House before turning along the old railway line to Moorgates.
There is then a steady climb to just beyond Birchwood before a gentle stroll back to the station and the start point.
Some steep paths and steps, and potential for areas of mud if the weather has been inclement. Overall mainly good tracks plus a little quiet road walking. Poles are recommended for the steep bits.
