Overview

A brisk walk over the Berkshire Downs following the Ridgeway path and then turning towards Aldworth, where we will have our lunch. This walk has a few significant climbs including a very steep one towards the end leading to a view over the Thames.  There is also a particularly steep descent into Goring.  You may find sticks useful on this walk. Given recent weather it is likely some chalk paths will be slippery and other paths muddy.  The terrain is mixture of grazing downland, arable farming and woodland.  Expect to see plenty of game birds and swooping red kites in open areas.   The pub at Aldworth is in a building dating back to 15th century while the even older church is known for its giant effigies.  This walk is based on SWC walk number 17.

Please make use of the toilets on train, or at stations en route.
Lunch: At Aldworth: Picnic in the cricket ground or at The Bell with its simple menu of filled buns.
Train: Paddington 9:38; Reading 10.24 arr Goring&Streatley 10.38 (Didcot Parkway Train).  Buy Return to Goring&Streatley.
