This is a linear walk - coming back on the bus, so please bring bus pass or change
Greenfield Docks, where we start, is an inlet off the Dee Estuary and can be very picturesque with the little boats either afloat at high tide or stranded in the mud. The coastal path follows the shore (good tarmac underfoot/also a cyclepath) with a sprinkle of information boards & artifacts along the way as well as great views across the Dee Estuary and towards the West Wirral.
Passing Bagillt and Bettisfield we walk on an footpath/embankment right by the water with several other inlets off the estuary, a great place for seeing geese, ducks and waders, especially in the winter (bring your binoculars).
The path rises gently and reaches the splendid Bagillt Beacon, fashioned in the shape of a dragon. This was installed at the same time that the Wales Coast Path was opened in 2012. We shall make a stop to appreciate not just all the industrial heritage on offer e.g. the remains of Bettisfield Colliery & the sundial memorial but also the great views.
On our recce as we headed towards Flint, a very high tide had partially covered the path and forced us to make a small detour.. that’s how close the path is to the water. We swap urban and industrial views for a wooded area full of silver birch before reaching an area of low ground and Flint Castle. Time will be taken to soak up its history before we grab a coffee in Flint town, and get to the nearest bus stop for the return trip.
