Overview

This is a varied walk with old houses, open views and riverside paths. Walking up Swan Lane we will pass Alswick Hall; The original building was constructed in the mid sixteenth century by the Baesh family, providing regular accommodation for Queen Elizabeth I. The Crouch family of Corney Bury then purchased the Manor in the latter part of the century, establishing a newer, larger property. Sadly, by the start of the twentieth century, the house was in a dilapidated condition. Work on restoring the original Tudor features began in 1945, yet in 1965 Alswick Hall suffered a devastating fire, and was restored by the previous owner. https://www.alswickhall.com/about/

We will walk past the now private St Bartholomew’s church at Layston before turning East to walk past Beauchamp’s Wood. Passing Silkmead Farm we will cross the road to walk beside the River Quin before reaching Great Hormead, which has some interesting houses. Pausing to view the church we will pass Great Hormead Bury to cross the Quin again to return to our start point.
