A great walk in hill country with some wonderful views and taking in two of the best known peaks in Staffordshire Moorlands.
Starting from Roaches Gate we first ascend to the top of Hen Cloud with dramatic views south towards Tittesworth Reservoir and north to Axe Edge Moor. We descend steeply into the grounds of Roaches Hall from where we follow the narrow lane to Upper Hulme, turning north to join the Churnet Way up to Ramshaw Rocks with it's dramatic rock formations. We walk over moorland and through Black Brook Nature Reserve as far as Gib Tor, turning west along country lanes to join a track which crosses Black Brook and climbs up to Roach End. After taking a well earned rest we follow the well know and popular path past more unusual rock formations and up to the trig point at the peak of the Roaches Ridge. We then descend, first gradually past Doxey Pool, and then more steeply, enjoying views of the almost vertical cliffs so loved by the rock climbing fraternity, before returning to our starting point at Roaches Gate.
