This walk is for up to 25 people, including the leader.
Part 16 of an epic long-distance trail around Hertfordshire!
The Hertfordshire Way is a 200-mile route around the county, which we're walking in sections each month. Don’t worry if you’ve missed previous parts of the series - everyone is welcome to join any of these walks.
Please note this is a linear walk with no public transport bewtween the start and end point, so it will be necessary to catch buses from/to Ware (see transport section) or arrange lift sharing.
We pick up the trail in Wadesmill and make our way to Much Hadham via another rather scenic section through the east Hertfordshire countryside. We'll meander alongside rivers, wander woodland paths, explore churches both ruined and active, tread the route of an abandoned railway, admire traditional villages and take in some great views, too, thanks to a couple of small hills. We’ll stop for a packed lunch at the recreation ground in Widford, so bring something tasty to enjoy and a mat or plastic bag to sit on if we've had wet weather. Due to the scheduling of the buses we should have more time than needed to complete the route. Combined with lack of open pubs, we will set a leisurely pace and have plenty of time to enjoy the scenery and history on the way. There is also the option of visiting the Much Hadham Forge Museum while we wait for the bus to Ware.
Transport: There's no direct public transport between Wadesmill and Much Hadham. It's recommended to travel to Ware and catch the 331 bus from Ware to Wadesmill, then the 35 bus from Much Hadman back to Ware at the end of the walk. Trains to Ware run from Hertford East and London Liverpool Street. For those driving, the Kibes Lane South or Amwell East & West car parks may be most appropriate (£5.30 all day) https://www.eastherts.gov.uk/highways-and-parking/details-our-car-parks/car-parks-ware
Dogs are welcome on a lead.
For information about walking with the group, including our dog policy, please visit the Stag Walkers website.
Booking your place: Please book your place using the free Meetup website/app. Join the Stag Walkers Meetup group and click the 'Attend' button on the event page.
Please do not turn up for a walk without booking, as places are limited.
If the walk is fully booked, please click 'join waitlist' then please check back regularly as you will likely get a place. The waitlist gives priority to single bookings so if you wish to bring a guest, we recommend booking separately.
Unless you opt in to further communications, we will only use contact information you provide to get in touch about the walk.
This is a linear walk.
The start time is when we aim to start walking and the finish time is an estimate.
Walks are graded Easy, Leisurely, Moderate or Strenuous in increasing order of difficulty. Please read the walk description to check it is within your abilities and contact the group if you are unsure.
Please:
- DO NOT book onto a walk unless you are pretty sure you will be able to make it.
- UPDATE YOUR RSVP. We understand ‘life happens’ so if you need to change your RSVP please do this at least 24 hours before the walk and before booking closes to enable someone else to take your place.
- DON’T NO-SHOW on the day unless it is absolutely unavoidable (we do understand ‘life happens’) because it prevents others from enjoying a walk if it is fully booked.
- *TAKE NOTE that if you no-show three times, without extenuating circumstances, we will decline further bookings from you for a period of six weeks.*
- DO car-share or use public transport if possible. To offer a lift or ask for one from a fellow walker, please use the Meetup event page.
- BRING a packed lunch/snacks and drinks, appropriate clothing for the conditions and optionally a basic first aid kit.
- FOLLOW NHS guidelines and do not attend the walk if you are unwell.
