To celebrate International Women's Day, we'll be walking from Wight Aviation Museum, where we can learn about Mary Ellis, and see the exhibit about her. She was a pilot for the Air Transport Auxiliary force during WWII, delivering more than 1000 planes, including Spitfires and Wellingtons, then became Europe's first female air commandant, managing the airport in Sandown for 20 years. Our circular walk from the museum will take us through Borthwood Copse, round Alverstone Garden Village, down to the railtrail, along to Langbridge, up through Newchurch Moors Nature Reserve, returning to the airport via Borthwood Copse again.
The start point is close to the no.8 bus route from Newport, or about a mile walk from the no.2 stop in Lake or Lake railway station. We meet at 9.30am to visit the museum which is graciously opening specially for us, with the walk starting at 10.30. Tea and coffee provided at the museum. We'll stop for a short refreshment break at Pedallers in Langbridge or the Pointer Inn in Newchurch (TBC). The walk is around 6 miles, with relatively (for the island!) little climbing, around 130m in total, a few stiles on the route, likely mud in a few spots. We should see spring springing especially in the woods.
New walkers welcome. If you are new to the Ramblers you can just turn up for any of our walks, unless we specify otherwise. We invite you to come along for three walks as a non-member.
Additional Notes
Depending on the weather, consider suitable, clothing, footwear, walking poles, sun cream, drinks, and food. Walking poles can be particularly useful in winter in helping you to stay upright! Watch out for ticks and remove ASAP. If you are unsure about your ability to undertake this walk, please contact the walks leader. If you need to leave the walking group, please ensure you inform the leader or back marker.
Please note that there may be short sections of road walking, so please walk in a single file and take good care.
Wise to look at the website on the day just in case of any changes or additional info. And in the event of extreme weather please check back for cancellation notices.
Emergencies
It's very rare that an emergency occurs, but we may need info about
- Any health concerns that you have
- Any emergency contact information
We'd ask you to make sure that we have ready access to this, if needed.
