A long, linear walk of 20.5kms (12.7 miles) with a lot of walking along woodland tracks and quiet country roads. We cross Kinnel Water (that we crossed on the last section) again and join up with the ‘Romans & Reivers Route’ (R&R Route) at the highest point of the walk (225m) and then towards the end of the walk we cross Evan Water, the main West Coast Railway, pass under the M74 motorway and then over the River Annan, all in quite close succession.
From Johnstonebridge, we have a short, uphill walk back to pick up where we left the Annandale Way on the last walk. We are immediately into open woodlands where we climb until passing below and to the west of, Kinnel Knock. We then descend and eventually dog-leg to cross the A701, back into woodlands. Emerging from the wood we see Kinnel Water below and head into a long, straight and flattish section. We emerge onto a road and cross Kinnel Water before following the road for approx. 3kms. At Cauldholm we take a track to the highest point on the walk where we also join the R&R Route for a while. A long, steepish descent along the ‘Crooked Road’ allows us to cross Evan Water before going under the M74. We then turn off from the R&R Route to head north for the River Annan and the car park.
There are toilets at the beginning and at the end of the walk. We finish a little out of Moffat town centre where there are numerous shops and cafes to use. Cars will be parked at Moffat and Johnstonebridge so car sharing will be required. The total ascent is 362m and is quite steep in places. The walk should take 6-7 hours so we should be in Moffat for around 1630’ish.
