Country tracks and field paths (muddy after rain) with a small amount of walking on country lanes/roads. Undulating hills in parts, mostly rough ground. Height gain around 1000 feet in the form of a consistent steady ascent (mostly before lunch - downhill after!) Kingsclere lies at the foot of a great chalk ridge that includes Watership Down made famous by author Richard Adams and his tale of the rabbits. From Kingsclere the walk climbs onto the downs at Hannington before joining the long distance Wayfarer's Walk (starting at Inkpen Beacon) along the top of the chalk ridge to the Iron Age hill fort on Ladle Hill. Excellent 360 degree views on a clear day. From here we drop off the Downs past Sydmonton Court (home of Andrew Lloyd-Webber) and make our way through the village of Ecchinswell and country fields back to Kingsclere.
Everyone is welcome. If you would like to join this walk, please notify the walk leader (Gill B 07887947826) or email swrsundaywalks@gmail.com.
