This 9 mile, double trig point walk takes us to the highest viewpoint in the Kilpatrick Hills, the grassy dome of Duncolm. Although the walk is close to Glasgow, it feels quite wild among the paths, moorland and reservoirs in the hills. Our first destination is Loch Humphrey at the end of a fairly steep climb up a broad, well established track. Views of the Erskine Bridge and Dumbarton Rock are impressive on the ascent. From here the walk heads towards Little Duncolm via a grassy path which includes some pretty boggy patches at points. Further along this path we skirt a second dome-summit, Middle Duncolm. From here we climb ‘big’ Duncolm itself to the trig point which can afford 360 degree views as far as Loch and Ben Lomond. We retrace our steps (back through the squelchy ground!) to Loch Humphrey and then follow the grassy path along the deer fence heading to the trig point at the top of the Slacks (another patch of mud here too-almost the last!). This is another pretty spectacular viewpoint and from here the path zig-zags down a steep hillside path with the return route providing fabulous views over the River Clyde and the city.
The walk begins from the Kilpatrick Braes car park which can be reached from Station Road in Old Kilpatrick. The car park can be busy at the weekends so car sharing and a prompt start will be helpful. So meeting in Kilmarnock at 8.30 to leave at 8.45. The total ascent is 490m and, due to the mixed terrain, walking poles and gaiters are advised.
