Overview

Join us for a walk which takes in the heart of the city. It is steeped in history, taking in the Old Town Jail, the Church of the Holy Rude, the Castle, the Beheading Stone, Cambuskenneth Abbey and the Wallace Monument. The views across the city from Mote Hill are spectacular and Ben Lomond and Ben Ledi are visible on a clear day.

Starting in the city centre we make our way up towards the Castle Esplanade passing several historical sites. This is a fairly long but gradual ascent and we will take it easy. Just before the esplanade we bear right along Upper Castle hill, turn right into Crofthead Road and make our way to Gowanhill and Mote Hill where we view the Beheading Stone.

Returning to the Gowanhill paths we skirt the rear of the castle and emerge at the cemetery before taking Back Walk down to the city centre. Just beyond the Railway Station we cross the road and rail bridge at Seaforth Road and walk straight along the road till we reach the footbridge across the river to Cambuskenneth where we turn into South Street to view the remains of the Abbey.

There is now a walk along Ladysneuk Road, a careful crossing of a Level Crossing then a busy main road walking to a roundabout, turning right and taking a short fairly steep shortcut to Hillfoots Road.  Further along this road we pass the Wallace Monument and continue straight on until we reach the entrance to the campus of the University. Here we make our way to the MacRobert Arts Centre where we end the walk.
