Prior booking essential – Mid-Staffs members
This walk provides an opportunity to explore parts of Manchester on foot – from Roman Mamucium to the ultra-modern and much in between - so will involve numerous stops to visit markets, buildings, cafés, churches, pubs, and many other points of interest along the way. Consequently, the walk will take much longer than the route’s 6.5 miles might indicate. Our recce took around 5 ½ hours.
The website, urbanrambles.org, includes a map of the route and a good description of what there is to see on it. However, I have extended the route by about a mile and a half to include the area between St Anne's Square and the Cathedral.
The walk will start and end at Piccadilly Station, meeting beneath the Arrivals/Departures board.
The easiest travel for most people is probably by train. A Senior railcard can make a significant difference to the price of the journey.
Yet to be confirmed:
We plan to take the first off-peak train from Stafford (09.34), arriving at Piccadilly at 10.29. We’d be aiming to start the walk as soon as possible after that, around 10.45.
OR
We plan to take the 09.03 from Stafford, arriving at Piccadilly at 09.59. We’d be aiming to start the walk as soon as possible after that, around 10.15.
It is essential that you book a place if you want to come. Numbers will be limited and places filled on a first come first served basis.
There will be at least two refreshment stops for elevenses and lunch. You can bring your own refreshments if you prefer not to use the cafés; there are plenty of pleasant outdoor seating areas. However, we are currently planning a coffee stop in the Royal Exchange.
